Description
Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG by La Veneranda is a deeply characterful red from 100% Sagrantino grapes, structured and long-lived, showing an intense ruby color tending to garnet, aromas of ripe red fruits and sweet spices, and prominent tannins well tempered by freshness and alcohol.
Area and grape
It comes from the Montefalco area in Umbria, from vineyards at about 300 m a.s.l. on sedimentary soils, slightly clayey with gravel and limestone, trained to spurred cordon; the grape variety is pure Sagrantino.
Vinification and aging
Traditional fermentation in steel with 15–20 days of maceration at controlled temperature and daily pump-overs; aging in oak barrels for 36 months, followed by a few months in bottle, as typical of the winery’s style.
Color and aroma
Intense ruby with garnet highlights; aromas of wild strawberries, raspberry, marasca cherry and notes of vanilla, sweet pipe tobacco and coffee on the finish, for a broad and complex bouquet.
Taste
Dry, very full-bodied and powerful in alcohol, with freshness and sapidity that make the tannic texture more composed and enjoyable; long persistence and spicy finish.
Style and pairings
Ideal with important red meats, roasts, game and aged cheeses; it also suits modern fine-dining dishes thanks to the balance of extract, tannin and spice.
Service
Serve at 18–20 °C; a brief oxygenation in the glass or decanter is recommended to relax the tannins and broaden the aromatic range.
Indicative data and longevity
Typical alcohol up to about 16% ABV and aging potential of 15–20 years in the top versions, in line with the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG style.
