Description
Montefalco Rosso DOC by La Veneranda is a structured yet harmonious Umbrian red, made from Sangiovese with portions of Sagrantino and a touch of Merlot, featuring a fruity–spicy profile, good freshness, and present but well-integrated tannins.
Area and grape blend
Born in the Montefalco area of Umbria, it follows a typical cut: approximately 65% Sangiovese, around 25% Sagrantino, and 10% Merlot according to the winery’s stated style; it is a blend that combines elegance, structure, and roundness.
Vinification and aging
Fermented in stainless steel with skin maceration for 15–20 days at controlled temperature with daily pump-overs, then aged in oak barrels (up to about 18 months) and a few additional months in bottle for balance and complexity.
Color and aroma
It shows an intense ruby hue; on the nose, red fruits such as cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry stand out, with a slightly herbal finish that adds freshness and aromatic definition.
Taste
On the palate it offers good structure and alcoholic power, yet remains smooth thanks to freshness and sapidity; Sagrantino lends tannic grip while Merlot contributes softness, for a well-balanced sip.
Style and pairings
This is a gastronomic, versatile red: ideal with structured first courses, stuffed pastas, roasted and grilled meats, and medium-aged cheeses; it also shines with traditional Sunday barbecue dishes.
Serving
Serve around 16 °C to highlight fruit and spice; it doesn’t require long oxygenation, but a few minutes in the glass open up the aromas and soften the tannin.
Indicative data and regulations
Recent vintages report alcohol up to about 15% ABV in the 0.75 L format; the Montefalco Rosso DOC style requires Sangiovese as the main grape with a share of Sagrantino and a minimum overall aging of 18 months as set by the denomination.
